- Student educational records are
considered confidential and may not be released without the
written consent of the student.
- As a faculty or staff member you
have a responsibility to protect educational records in your
possession.
- Some information is considered
public (sometimes called "Directory Information"). This info
could typically be released without the student's written
permission. However, the student may opt to restrict release of
this information to make it confidential as well. IUPUI
Directory Information includes: Name, Campus, School or
Division, Major Field of Study, Admission or Enrollment Status,
Dates of Attendance, Degrees and Awards, University E-mail
Address, Activities and Sports and Athletic information. Note: While FERPA allows for the inclusion of address and
phone as directory information, IUPUI has excluded those from
the institution's definition so student address and phone
information is not released without student consent.
- You have access to information
only for legitimate use in completion of your responsibilities
as a university employee. Need to know is the basic principle.
- If you are ever in doubt, do not
release any information until you contact the Office of the
Registrar at 317-274-1519. The Office of the Registrar is
responsible for student record information.
