* please note that as a result of different policy initiatives over the years dramatic shifts in headcount may appear where the number of true majors in a school may not have changed. For example, in addition to serving its own students, in the Fall of 1988 the School of Liberal Arts became the academic home for students who had more than 56 credits but who were fulfilling prerequisites for admission to another program such as Business or Nursing. These students previously had been housed in University Division. As a result, the headcount within Liberal Arts was inflated beyond that of its true majors. This policy was changed for the Fall of 1996 resulting in a significant drop in students housed in Liberal Arts while the students completing prerequisites for non-Liberal Arts programs were moved to other units such as University College. The number of true Liberal Arts majors within the school for 1996 through 1998 remained essentially unchanged.
In some cases new school codes have been adopted while others have been discontinued. A link exists from each report to a list of school codes or a list of academic department codes. Discontinued codes or those used as part of the Consortium for Urban Education are identified at the bottom of the appropriate pages. Both reports contain the complete list of school and department codes used at any time during the years covered. This was done to allow more easy comparison of printed reports from different periods.
