Indiana University Master Course Inventory Summary

Every course taught at Indiana University has specific characteristics associated with it including (but not limited to) department, course, and title.

Creation of a course or modification of an existing course requires approval at a number of campus and all-university levels. Once approved, the course will appear on the Master Course Inventory. Courses may not be taught unless they appear on the inventory in approved status, designated with the letter "U." The full list of codes for the status of the course appear below.

The appearance of courses on the Master Course Inventory which are offered at another Indiana University campus does not necessarily imply that a course number or title may be appropriated for departmental use without first processing a New Course Form with the notation "New to this Campus" in the justification line. Contact the Dean of the Faculties Office if you have questions or require clarification.

In special circumstance, interim approval to list the course in the Schedule of Classes may be granted and only if full approval of the new course or course change is anticipated prior to the start of the semester in which the new or modified course will be offered.

Courses no longer being taught will appear with a status of "X," meaning that the course may not be taught unless approval to reinstate the course is granted.

We are also listing those elements which are most frequently used in building course offerings.

Appearance on the inventory does not necessarily mean the course is taught at a particular campus, but only that it is (or was) taught in the IU system. Be careful to pay close attention to the status column to be sure the course is available for
scheduling.

This list will be updated on a regular basis and the date of last update will appear at the top of the summary page. For more current or complete information on a course, a user would need to invoke the MCIN transaction within the IUIS production environment. Contact the Office of the Registrar or the person responsible for course scheduling in your school for more details.
